North Korea has taken on a surprising role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, refining its military abilities and establishing beneficial economic ties amidst this proxy battle between East and West.
Military experts suggest that North Korea has dispatched thousands of troops to support Russia and might evolve into a significant arms supplier due to this conflict. With Western nations continuing to invest billions in Ukraine, Russia is increasingly turning to North Korea for ammunition and weaponry, particularly in light of pressing sanctions.
Reports indicate that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers are expected to be deployed in Ukraine by early 2026. The U.S. State Department has also confirmed that North Korea will be involved on the battlefield starting in 2024.
“This is quite alarming,” noted Fred Fleitz, a security expert. “While the North Korean military is learning tactical maneuvers, they’re also picking up advanced drone strategies. This experience is not something we want them to gain, as it bolsters their military capabilities significantly.”
In June 2024, President Putin formalized a defense agreement with Kim Jong Un, referring to it as an “alliance.”
Brandon Weichert, a national security analyst, speculated that through this alliance, Russia may have provided advanced submarine technologies to North Korea. The nation appears eager to modernize its aging Soviet-era submarine fleet to enhance its deterrence against South Korea.
Oil exports from Russia to North Korea have surpassed the annual limits set by UN mandates, with over 165,000 barrels of refined oil shipped in March 2024 alone.
The dynamic between Russia and North Korea could enhance North Korea’s military prowess, as it receives valuable combat experience they currently lack.
In 2024, North Korea’s economy reportedly grew by 3.7%, benefiting from arms sales to Russia and maintaining solid relations with China, according to financial reports.
“We are witnessing a stronger bond between Kim and Putin,” Fleitz remarked, suggesting that Russia is ramping up its support in various sectors for North Korea, including missile and satellite technology.
This war, as mentioned by some analysts, may worsen the nuclear proliferation issue, providing North Korea with insights and experiences unavailable domestically.
Investigations reveal that during a 20-month timeframe, North Korea may have supplied Russia with millions of artillery shells, ballistic missiles, multiple rocket systems, and long-range artillery.
Trump’s approach had been to exert maximum pressure on North Korea before entering negotiations. While North Korea hasn’t conducted a nuclear test since its alleged hydrogen bomb detonation in 2017, concerns about their expanding nuclear capabilities remain prevalent.
Current assessments suggest North Korea is dedicated to growing its nuclear arsenal, particularly as they refine missile technology and enhance capabilities with potential assistance from Russia, China, and Iran.
Reports indicate that North Korea has sent over 7,000 containers of munitions to Russia for the conflict in Ukraine. However, conventional threats remain, as South Korea’s capital is within artillery range of North Korea, posing an imminent risk.
Given North Korea’s increased military advancements and ongoing population dynamics, experts warn that the balance of power may shift away from South Korea, especially with its aging population.
“This demographic disparity is concerning,” Weichert observed. “South Korea’s future could be compromised as its population ages while North Korea’s birth rate remains relatively stable.”
