Folarin Balogun Suspended for Belgium Match
The U.S. is gearing up for a pivotal clash in the World Cup, but they’ll be without one of their standout players, Folarin Balogun. Unfortunately, he’s sidelined for Monday’s Round of 16 against Belgium due to a red card received during a previous match.
In a rather unfortunate incident, Balogun got tangled with an opponent while reaching for a loose ball. He accidentally stepped on the opponent’s ankle, leading the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review the situation. It was determined that the foul was serious enough to warrant a red card.
This decision not only meant Balogun had to leave the field, but it also put the U.S. team at a disadvantage, playing the remainder of the game with only ten players. Now, he will miss out on the upcoming match against Belgium.
In his first comments after the incident, Balogun expressed his disagreement with the ruling. “First of all, it was completely unintentional. I think a lot of people know that. But, you know, the referee’s choice was his choice, but I don’t think it was the right call. I think a yellow card would have been fair since it wasn’t intentional,” he told reporters. “You don’t always know how you’re going to end up in a scenario like that. But it happened, and I suppose you just have to move on.”
Reflecting on the emotions surrounding the call, he mentioned experiencing a mix of feelings from various parties. “Some were upset, some happy—it was surreal, honestly. But for me, staying calm is key. It’s essential to show younger fans the right way to handle disappointments, even when things seem unfair. I appreciate the support from my teammates, and we’re all looking forward to taking on Belgium.”
Despite the frustration, there’s no appeal process available for this type of decision. According to FIFA regulations, once the referee makes a call regarding the play, it cannot be contested. Balogun will only be unavailable for the match against Belgium, assuming the U.S. team advances, he could participate in the quarterfinals.
