Serena Williams’ Wimbledon Comeback Cut Short
Serena Williams will not continue her journey at Wimbledon. On Saturday, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion shared on Instagram that she had to withdraw from a doubles match with her sister Venus because of an injury to her right knee.
This was set to be the first time the sisters played together since the 2022 U.S. Open, where they were slated to compete against Sorona Sierra and Camila Osorio.
Previously, Serena had made her comeback in singles, but after a loss to Maya Joynt on June 30, she posted a video of herself limping while taking care of her daughters, showing a brace on her leg, as well as an image of her receiving treatment.
“Heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles,” she expressed in her post. “Competing again is a gift, and playing with @venuswilliams meant so much to me. I did everything I could to prepare, but my knee just isn’t ready yet.”
She expressed gratitude to tournament director Jamie Baker and the team for supporting her, along with a heartfelt thanks to the fans for making her return special. “I can only say, look forward to a city near you…” she added.
Interestingly, her post featured a photo of a syringe filled with fluid, which she noted was used to drain her knee. “The photo shows the fluid removed after my singles match… amazing!” she wrote, indicating that this would help prevent further swelling. However, despite her efforts, she couldn’t prepare for doubles.
Details regarding Serena’s injury first emerged when she did not attend media obligations following her singles match. Her agent, Jill Smolder, explained to the London Times that the 13-time Wimbledon champion “had a minor adjustment to her knee” during her first match in nearly four years.
Moreover, Venus Williams’ mixed doubles partner, Kevin Krawitz, lost her first match, marking what seems to be the end of her Wimbledon career as well.
