Hollywood Celebrities Launch Campaign Against Trump’s Administration
A collection of affluent Hollywood stars and activists has rolled out a video initiative urging Americans to resist the Trump administration as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.
The video, which debuted in a variety show, features numerous celebrities like Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow. In the approximately 10-minute clip, these figures read excerpts from “On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century,” authored by historian Timothy Snyder.
Kicking off the video, Snyder cautioned viewers, labeling the upcoming midterm elections this November as a pivotal moment for the country. He suggested that, depending on voter turnout, there could be either positive changes or a downward spiral.
Snyder pointed out that “Today, the Republic is celebrating its 250th anniversary, and this book, oddly enough, has been a companion to it for the past decade. I penned this in November of 2016.” He added, “As we approach this November, we face a crucial crossroads for our republic. Things could either turn for the better or take a turn for the worse.”
The celebrities recited various lines from Snyder’s work, including reminders like “Don’t follow ahead,” shared by Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Holland Taylor. Another caution, “Beware of One-Party States,” was delivered by Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna.
Ruffalo, who is well-known for his role in “The Avengers,” expressed his motivations for joining the campaign in an interview. He is a long-time critic of the Trump administration.
“I hope we can move past this corrupt era characterized by a government catering exclusively to the wealthy and focusing instead on the aspirations of young people,” Ruffalo stated. He expressed a desire for America to advance toward its foundational promises, rather than continue dwelling on past missteps and injustices.
Ruffalo also highlighted the need to narrow the wealth gap and show greater care for the planet. He emphasized moving away from outdated ideals of land exploitation and adopting a perspective that respects all beings as worthy of our consideration.
In addition, Snyder shared a video on social media, noting, “To celebrate rebellion is to acknowledge that we can create something fresh from a flawed reality. We can connect, envision, and construct a better America. This 250th anniversary—it’s ours.” He voiced firm opposition directly toward the figures leading the current anniversary celebrations, viewing them as a threat to freedom.
Snyder’s critiques of the current leadership included accusations of arbitrary rule, legal disregard, the unjust accumulation of wealth, and collusion with external powers for personal gain. He mentioned notable attendees from the video as well, which included many other celebrities and activists.
