Protests Erupt in Erfurt Against Alternative for Germany Party

On Saturday, the German city of Erfurt saw tens of thousands of far-left demonstrators take to the streets, protesting the conservative party Alternative for Germany (AfD). The situation escalated into clashes with law enforcement.

Footage from the scene depicted police using batons and riot control measures as rallying crowds shouted slogans against the AfD. According to police reports, over 30,000 individuals participated in the protest, waving signs with messages like “Stop the AfD Nazis” and “No Nazis for Diversity.”

Despite this, police characterized the protest as “mostly peaceful,” although they recorded about 100 legal infractions, mostly involving graffiti.

The rallies took place concurrently with the AfD’s party congress and leadership election, during which Alice Weidel and Tino Churupala were reelected as co-leaders. Churupala denounced the demonstrators, expressing concern over the methods they chose to voice their discontent.

He stated, “There are no peaceful sit-down blockades… These troublemakers are the last resort of political opponents.” His comments reflected a broader critique of what he called anti-democratic actions, asserting that the protesters were trying to monopolize the concept of democracy.

Members of the local anti-fascist group Widesetzen reiterated their goal of blocking the AfD congress. Their spokesperson, Lena Raupach, claimed the AfD’s policies were fascistic and detrimental to ordinary people, promoting a vision of society that emphasizes equality and solidarity instead.

The AfD continues to contend with accusations of extremism from both public and political figures across the spectrum. However, the party rejects this label, viewing it as a means for mainstream parties to undermine their influence. In recent years, the AfD has gained significant traction and aims to secure over 20% of the national vote in the upcoming federal election.

Churupala expressed a sense of optimism that they might soon govern independently, pointing out their alignment with conservative sentiments similar to those championed by former President Donald Trump. At the event, one attendee even sported a hat parodying Trump’s famous slogan. This incident underscores a shared ideology, particularly concerning immigration and cultural policies.
