Malik Tillman’s Journey from Goalkeeper Aspirations to World Cup Glory

SEATTLE — There was a time when Malik Tillman was just a kid, dreaming of being a goalie, perhaps too young to truly grasp what lay ahead. He and his brother, Timothy, would often practice their free kicks; one of them taking the shot while the other played keeper. But lately, Malik has been more inclined to score instead of guard the net.

It became evident pretty quickly that his future wasn’t in goalkeeping. “No one wanted us in goal,” Timmy told the Post. “They all said, ‘No, you’d better stay on the field.’”

Good thing Malik listened. And it’s fortunate he kept honing his shooting skills instead of sticking to stopping shots. His striking performance that secured the U.S. national team’s victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 is now a standout moment of this World Cup, especially with the Round of 16 match against Belgium coming up.

Before taking that decisive kick, Tillman, along with teammates Anthony Robinson and Tyler Adams, strategized on how best to approach the shot. Robinson thought the wall would leap, while Tillman figured he should shoot underneath it.

It would be a tough angle anyway, but Tillman had confidence in his abilities. “Just to be clear, I didn’t jump over the wall,” he noted.

“I know there were some players who doubted I could get over the wall,” Tillman admitted. “But I practiced this in training.”

His first World Cup goal wasn’t just significant—it punctuated what’s been an impressive tournament for the 24-year-old. Remarkably, after sustaining a cut from a defender’s cleat that required a midgame substitution, he still managed to make an impact, leaving a memorable impression.

“Good luck convincing him to put rubbing alcohol on that,” teammate Weston McKennie joked. “But it was a fantastic finish. He’s been practicing it.”

“I think it’s just a bit of pain,” Tillman responded. “It can’t be that bad.”

Just a couple of months prior, Tillman found himself struggling for playing time in what was proving to be a challenging first season with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga. It might not have been easy to hear from Coach Mauricio Pochettino that he would be deployed as a deeper central midfielder, rather than his preferred attacking role during the World Cup.

However, he excelled in whatever role he was assigned, proving crucial in the team’s buildup and ball movement. Although he provided an assist against Paraguay, he missed another opportunity against Bosnia when he inadvertently deflected a ball off a defender.

Defensively, Tillman has been solid as well.

Quiet and humble, he tends to avoid self-praise. “Outside of scoring, he was our best player on the field,” stated team captain Tim Ream. “He’s not just doing the dirty work; he makes the complex seem effortless. I think he just wanted to feel like he belonged.”

“He’s a quiet kid, but he’s come a long way,” Timmy said, reflecting on Malik’s growth. “Last summer with the Gold Cup was huge for him. It might have been a tough moment against Costa Rica, but now? He looks like a different player. The confidence was always there; he just needed to believe in himself.”

Last season, that self-assurance didn’t always come easily. While Malik had established himself at PSV Eindhoven, scoring 16 goals during the 2024-25 season, he found the transition to a more competitive league challenging.

Though he and Timmy, who plays for LAFC, talk every week, not all discussions revolve around soccer. By the end of the past season, Timmy felt compelled to share some encouragement. “This year at Leverkusen was probably the first setback he’s faced,” he said. “He wasn’t always the happiest, but I told him to prepare as best he could for the World Cup. It’s a massive opportunity for players.”

“I feel he worked hard,” Timmy concluded. “For now, I’m ready, so I’m just going to enjoy it.”
