US Navy Suspends Search for Missing Helicopter Crew Member
The US Central Command (NAVCENT), responsible for overseeing the US 5th Fleet, has officially announced that the active search for the crew member of a military helicopter that crashed in the Arabian Sea will be discontinued.
A Seahawk helicopter made an emergency landing on Wednesday, and three of the four crew members were rescued quite quickly. Unfortunately, a fourth crew member, whose identity will remain undisclosed until the next of kin is informed, is still missing. An extensive search was launched for this individual.
Nevertheless, NAVCENT stated that the active search concluded on Sunday.
The operation spanned several thousand miles over four days, involving multiple helicopter units, aircraft, and ships, according to the command.
“This effort concluded after an extensive search by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility,” NAVCENT indicated.
“For over 102 hours, a coordinated search and rescue operation was executed, covering more than 14,000 square miles,” they added.
The Navy has not released further specifics about the incident but mentioned earlier that it is under investigation and noted that there is “no indication” that the emergency was caused by hostile actions.
