Unplanned Fireworks Explosion in Chino Injures Several
A Fourth of July fireworks event in Chino, Southern California, turned chaotic on Saturday when an unapproved display led to an explosion, resulting in injuries and a fire.
Reports from news outlets in Los Angeles noted that multiple individuals were injured during the incident.
Footage shared with ABC7 depicts bystanders fleeing the scene and vehicles engulfed in flames. Additional coverage showed the aftermath of the explosion and the fire.
Witness Gabriel Gilmore, who recorded the video, explained that he was at his mother’s home when he heard a blast so intense it felt more like something catastrophic than fireworks. He described the scene, saying, “The ground shook, and then a huge explosion echoed. It sounded as if a gas line had ruptured.” He noted that the smoke cloud rising in the distance was enormous and, upon rushing over, he encountered debris scattered everywhere.
KTLA reported that four people were injured, including a child, although details regarding their injuries remain unclear.
According to law enforcement, preliminary investigations suggest a large quantity of fireworks ignited, leading to the explosion.
Local regulations state that only “safe and sane” fireworks are permitted within city limits, which are defined as items that do not explode or fly, and carry a State Fire Marshal’s seal.
As of now, police have not disclosed whether any charges will be brought against those responsible for the unauthorized fireworks.
Chino, a suburb in the western part of San Bernardino County, is located about 55 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
