Landon Donovan Reacts to Folarin Balogun’s Suspension Lift
USMNT icon Landon Donovan has finally spoken up following the news that Folarin Balogun’s suspension has been lifted.
He expressed that FIFA “made the right decision,” despite his personal feelings on the matter. “Honestly, it’s not for me to judge whether I like it or not. Of course, in this case, I’m thrilled,” Donovan shared in a video on his X account. “Ultimately, they made the right call. Flo should never have received that red card. It’s not fair to send a player off, especially when he has the opportunity to represent his country in the Round of 16.”
Balogun’s red card came during the US’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when Balogun accidentally stepped on the ankle of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Mujaremović in the 61st minute, leading to the contentious red card.
Since then, discussions have arisen about whether the card was justified. Some have drawn parallels between Balogun’s situation and an incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo during the qualifying rounds. Although Ronaldo faced a potential three-match suspension, he ultimately served a shorter penalty, missing only the final qualifying match.
Under Article 27, it’s indicated that the judicial body may decide on the extent of any disciplinary action.
Donovan mentioned that both Balogun and Ronaldo were in a kind of trial period for a year following their respective incidents. “In the end, it’s about the right decision being made. You might not even have to agree with it. It’s not a unique situation; just think back to Ronaldo’s red card in qualifying. The best part is that Flo is back. I really feel justice has been served. Let’s go! I can’t wait for tomorrow,” Donovan concluded.
