John Mozeliak anticipates an increase in trade deadline inquiries following the MLB Draft.

Angels’ Trade Deadline Strategy Under Interim GM

The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak seems ready to make moves—but not just yet.

In a recent appearance on MLB Network Radio, Mozeliak emphasized that the Angels are prioritizing the MLB Draft over trading right now.

“I haven’t had any significant talks with other teams,” he noted. “We’ve only exchanged some ideas about what others might want. Most of the communication has been through text messages from other general managers,” he added.

Mozeliak mentioned that while no specific players have been discussed, he expects more active conversations about potential trades to pick up once the draft concludes.

“After the draft, we’ll gain clarity on our roster, our outlook, and what the market may bear,” he stated. “That’s really the key part. Sure, trades can happen, but if they don’t lead to long-term benefits or internal improvements, they lose their significance.”

The Angels are an interesting team to watch as the trade deadline approaches, with several players—including Jose Soriano, Reid Detmers, and Joe Adell—potentially on the trading block. Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic remarked that the Angels possess enough leverage to shape the deadline dynamics.

Historically, the Angels have been hesitant to sell during the deadline, often holding onto prospects. This included last season, when former GM Perry Minassian had the chance to trade Shohei Ohtani before he joined the Dodgers.

Owner Arte Moreno had a significant role in blocking potential deals for Ohtani, despite interest from multiple teams.

Since taking on the interim GM role, Mozeliak has been open about the need for a shift in the Angels’ approach. “Currently, this team isn’t in a good spot. We’re not winning, and it seems like we’re finding ways to lose. That’s understandably frustrating for fans and the players who show up every day,” he remarked. “We know a change is necessary.”
