Belgium federation allegedly secures the chance to contest Balogun's red card suspension

Belgian Football Federation Appeals FIFA’s Decision on Balogun

On Monday, reports surfaced indicating that the Belgian Football Federation (RBFA) will appeal FIFA’s recent decision to suspend the red card handed to American soccer player Folarin Balogun during the World Cup.

The RBFA has formally requested an explanation from FIFA regarding this suspension reversal. They have also sought additional information from the FIFA committee, according to sources.

FIFA’s announcement about lifting Balogun’s suspension marks a historical moment. It’s reportedly the first time since 1962 that a red card issued in a World Cup match hasn’t resulted in an actual suspension. Balogun received the red card for stepping on the ankle of a Bosnia and Herzegovina defender during a match.

The RBFA has expressed surprise at this development, with Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia openly critiquing FIFA’s ruling. He remarked, somewhat humorously, that the ruling made him think “July 5th was April 1st in Europe.” Garcia emphasized that the federation is standing up not just for itself but for the sport as a whole, suggesting that such a decision is unprecedented in World Cup history.

When questioned about the potential for an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Garcia declined to comment. He also sidestepped inquiries regarding whether President Trump had any sway over FIFA’s choice.

The RBFA stated it’s exploring all options to defend the rights of participating teams, hoping to uphold the principles of fair play, which they believe are vital for current and future tournaments. Some sources mentioned that Trump may have contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding a review of the red card.

FIFA indicated that Balogun’s suspension will be lifted for a trial period of one year. If he commits another serious foul during this probation, the earlier suspension will be reinstated and make way for possible additional penalties.

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino voiced his approval of FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension. He mentioned that during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the call was not just unfair but detrimental, as the team played for 30 minutes with one player down.
