Fireworks Incident Involves Delta Air Lines Flight in Chicago
During its approach to a Chicago airport, a Delta Air Lines flight experienced an unexpected encounter with fireworks, with pilots noting they “definitely felt a huge impact.”
The incident occurred on Saturday evening as the aircraft, which was carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, made its descent into Midway International Airport. A spokesperson for Delta confirmed that the plane “came into contact with fireworks during its descent.”
Fortunately, the flight landed safely and proceeded to the gate without any reported injuries.
Audio footage indicated that the pilot of Delta Flight 1076 communicated with air traffic controllers, mentioning, “The plane just got hit by a firework.” The pilot expressed hope that it was merely a mortar falling, but acknowledged it felt like a significant impact.
In response, the air traffic controller informed the pilots of “multiple reports” regarding similar fireworks incidents on the runway, alerting them prior to the fireworks encounter.
The controller warned, “Delta 1076…be careful. Multiple houses are setting off fireworks near the approach edge.” They added that the city is aware of the situation and will notify the Chicago Police Department, though the specifics of any actions remained uncertain.
After landing, the Airbus A319 underwent an inspection, which revealed no damage. The pilot indicated that the flight was descending from an altitude of 200 feet, a height similar to where many consumer fireworks can reach. In contrast, professional fireworks can ascend up to 1,200 feet.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently looking into the matter.
