Legendary driver Cale Yarborough is one of the most recognizable names in NASCAR racing history. He died on Sunday at the age of 84..
Yarborough won the Daytona 500 four times and won three consecutive NASCAR championships from 1976 to 1978.
He was the first to accomplish that feat, and no South Carolina native matched it until Jimmie Johnson won five consecutive titles from 2006 to 2010.
Yarborough's other career highlights include five wins in the Southern 500 at his home track in Darlington, South Carolina.
Yarborough and Johnson are tied for the most wins in NASCAR history with 83.
Yarborough competed in NASCAR for more than 40 years. He retired from full-time racing in 1980 after winning six races, but continued to compete in open-wheel racing, including four appearances in the Indianapolis 500.
After permanently retiring from driving in 1988, he owned Cale Yarborough Motorsports and competed in the Cup Series until 2000. Yarborough also owned several farming businesses and a used car dealership.
