Former President Donald Trump on Sunday explained why former first lady Melania Trump has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent months.
President Trump revealed in a video posted on Twitter that the former first lady skipped the New Year's Eve celebrations at Mar-a-Lago to spend time with her sick mother, Amalia Knabs.
“Melania, a wonderful first lady. She is very popular and people love her. She is currently in the hospital with her mother. Her mother, Amalia, is seriously ill. But we hope that she will recover. I hope so,” Trump said on stage after noting first lady Melania Trump's absence to the audience.
The former president said he had visited the Miami hospital where first lady Melania Trump's mother is hospitalized, calling it “a very nice hospital.” Trump also said he knew Melania “about 95 percent of the time” and that she was “sending love” to the audience. “Hopefully they'll be okay. But it's tough, very tough,” President Trump said.

A source close to the former first lady told Page Six that Melania Trump was missing from the Trump family's Christmas card as she was spending time with her ailing mother. Another source told Fox News that first lady Melania Trump has “always been devoted to her family” and that she is “no wonder she spent Christmas with her sick mother.”
