An unidentified man attacked South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung on Tuesday while he was visiting the southeastern port city of Busan. according to Yonhap News Agency (YNA) in South Korea.
Lee was conscious but bleeding when he was taken to the hospital 20 minutes after the attack. A video has been circulating on social media platforms showing the moment Lee was stabbed on the left side of his neck with an unidentified weapon while surrounded by reporters.
After touring the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan, the leader of the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, answered questions with reporters. His assailants were arrested on the spot.
According to YNA, a spokesperson for Lee's former political opponent, President Yun Seok-yeol of the conservative People's Power Party, said the South Korean leader had expressed concern for Lee's safety and had told relevant authorities that He said he was instructed to transport him immediately and receive treatment.
Yun lost Lee narrowly ran for president in 2022, one of the nation's closest races. Mr. Lee received 47.8% of the vote, and Mr. Yoon received 48.6%.
Before the election, Lee was the governor of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea's most populous province.
