Trump sees House GOP leaders close ranks, No. 3 Republican reveals 2024 backing

The third-ranking Republican in the House, Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota), supports former President Trump in his bid to retake the White House in 2024.

President Trump now heads into the Iowa caucuses on January 15th with the support of all House Republican leaders.

“Democrats have made clear they will use any means necessary to keep Joe Biden and his failed policies in power,” Emmer said in a statement Wednesday. “We can't forgive them.”

“The time has come for the Republican Party to unite behind our party's clear front-runner, which is why I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president.”

This comes a day after House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) also announced his support for Trump.

House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik of New York was the first member of the Republican majority to endorse the former president, announcing her decision in November 2022. National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Richard Hudson (RN.C) endorsed Trump. Even back then.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) endorsed Trump last November.

The unification of the House Republican leadership around Trump is the latest sign of his continued control over the Republican Party.

Trump has so far led in all major 2024 Republican primary polls, and in recent months has narrowly edged President Biden in several polls for the upcoming general election.

According to a Fox News poll released on December 17, President Trump's approval rating in the primary was 69%, up 7% from November.

Emmer's endorsement is also significant given that he has had a rockier public relationship with Trump than other House Republican leaders.

Mr. Trump and his allies spearheaded the derailment of Mr. Emmer's bid for speaker of the House in October. Trump publicly attacked Emmer on his Truth Social platform, calling her a “RINO” and making various accusations.

Emmer was among the Republicans who voted to certify the 2020 election results, but 147 of his Republican colleagues in the House and Senate did not vote.

But President Trump endorsed Emmer for re-election in 2022, when she was chairman of the House Republican Campaign Committee. In a post on Truth Social, he praised Emmer as an “outstanding” representative who is “committed” to Republican policy goals.
