UN Women's UK arm faced a backlash after announcing a pro-Palestinian transgender model would be a “champion” for women.
Munro Bergdorf was named the inaugural UN Women British Champion in November. But 17 women's organizations took notice and wrote an open letter on January 2 expressing their concerns about her appointment.
The letter is addressed to UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous, the UN Women Executive Committee and the UN Women UK Committee: “The UK has over 33 million women and you are ignoring each and every one of us. and chose a man.” she said.

The letter was signed by organizations including Fair Play For Women, LGB Alliance, Sex Matters and Women's Declaration International – UK.
“Munroe Bergdorf's well-known work is not pro-female,” the letter continued.
Other critics, such as Douglas Murray, denounced the main UN Women group as another example of bad decision-making by international organizations.
“This group seems to have real problems,” Murray said on Talk TV. Ms Murray also expressed concern that UN Women stalled her for nearly two months before explicitly condemning Hamas' brutal rape of women.

Bergdorf, a pro-Palestinian activist who posted messages such as “Gays for Gaza,” “Dike for a Free Palestine,” and “Queer for Palestine,” called for an end to Israel's national security response to Palestine. He called for a “ceasefire.” Hamas terrorist attack and invasion on October 7th.
The qualifications to become a UN Women UK 'champion' included 'someone who has made an extraordinary contribution to gender equality and the rights of women and girls'.
“It has been my personal ambition and dream to work with the United Nations. It is a responsibility that I cannot take lightly,” Bergdorf said in an interview with Attitude. “I will use this role to further advocate for advancement, safety, inclusion and empowerment for all women and girls and all communities and identities.”
