Fixing woes with Jets offense ‘starts with me’

Nathaniel Hackett knows numbers.

He knows what the rankings are.

He knows what they say about his and the Jets' ever-present offensive struggles.

Hackett admitted that what was once a promising start to the season was inconsistent.

But he said he will completely review everything after Sunday's game against the Patriots.

“Right now we're just getting ready for New England. I think it'll be great to evaluate everything,” he said before Thursday's practice. “We've had a lot of changes. … We've missed some opportunities, we've had some inconsistencies, we've experienced self-harm, and we have to take all of that seriously, and We have to fix them, and it starts with me. So I think it's good to calm down a little bit and reevaluate everything.”

Nathaniel Hackett said he will reflect on the 2023 season after the Jets play the Patriots in Week 18. Bill Kothrone of the New York Post

At 6-10, the Jets are last in the league in touchdowns this season with 21, 17 offensive touchdowns (11 passing, 6 rushing), and last in passer rating (71.2).

They are also second to last in sacks allowed this season (63), just ahead of the Giants.

The Jets have scored 10 or fewer points in six of their 10 losses, including a 30-0 shutout of the Dolphins on Dec. 17.

This year's offense is comparable to the 2020 team coached by Adam Gase, but far less talented than the likes of Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, who went 2-14 last season.

In 2020, the Jets averaged 15.2 points and 26 touchdowns per game, but this year they are averaging 15.7 points and 21 touchdowns per game.

The team from three years ago had a slight advantage in yards per game (299.9) compared to the 2023 team (297.8).

Despite the numbers, Woody Johnson confirmed that Hackett will return for the 2024 season along with head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.

Whether it appeases Aaron Rodgers or not, the decision showed some kind of confidence in a system that has led to the team's eight straight losing seasons.

Mr. Saleh demonstrated this on Wednesday by speaking of his confidence in Mr. Hackett.

“Obviously, I have a lot of confidence in him,” Saleh said. “If you look, it's going to be hard for people to recognize it, but let's start with the Atlanta game. Through the tape, we saw a lot of improvement, but I won't go into the stats.

“We had two games where we scored over 30 points. I thought we moved the ball well against Cleveland. [on Sunday]had a bad game against Miami. [in Week 15].I felt like the offense really took a step in the right direction against Atlanta. [in Week 13]. I know we didn't get the points, but we had a lot of chances in that game, but I feel like the team got better, especially in the second half of the season. We have a chance to finish on a good note. We might get three of the last five and like I said, things are getting better.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he has “a lot of confidence” in offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Bill Kothrone of the New York Post

“[Hackett has] I've adapted many times in the past and I know it's difficult [see with] It's visible to the naked eye, but over the past six months, a lot of adaptations have taken place in every motion, every screen, and every gadget playing. I have a lot of confidence in the way he interacts with people, the way he communicates with people and the energy he has throughout the season despite all the adversity. I trust him very much. ”

Next year, Hackett will be more confident with Rodgers by his side.

Hackett's most successful season came when he won four MVP awards in Green Bay.

As the Packers' offensive coordinator in 2021, the team went 13-4, losing to the 49ers in the divisional playoff round.

Over the past two seasons, Hackett led the Packers' offense to a 13-3 record with playoff appearances in 2019 and 2020.

With more stability at quarterback and a recovering offensive line, Hackett may feel he has what it takes to achieve similar results next season.

“I think in all things I look back at my past, what I've accomplished. I think every year is so new and so different,” he says on why fans should believe he's still the right man for the job. Hackett answered this question: “This team, you never know what it's going to be this year…what it's going to be next year. It's a lot of people and everyone coming together.

“For me, I have to evaluate myself. I always do that and find everything that I can do better to help us, and it's all thanks to the fans and the organization.” Whether it's working or working more efficiently…and making sure we get better. We need to put better products out there, and we all know that.”
