From overwhelming odds of -1000 to a coin flip, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter is no longer in the running for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
Some of that is due to the Eagles' poor play in the second half, but the rest is due to the rise of Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr.
Anderson, drafted No. 3 overall, went from +400 to +125 on FanDuel just this week due to an influx of wagers.
“The flow of money coming into Carter has slowed significantly in recent weeks,” a trader at FanDuel Sportsbook told the Post. “Earlier this week we were inundated with bets on Koby Turner, but in the last few days Will Anderson has become very popular with bettors.”
Despite the fact that Anderson would play in just 15 games while Carter would play in 16, this number and subsequent stakes flooded the market.
“At the end of the season, voters may start sharing who they pick for awards. This could cause a move on the line and our trading team will be monitoring the news,” BetMGM Senior Trading Department Manager Tristan Davis told the Post.
At first glance, it would seem that no voters voted for Mr. Anderson, but it is interesting to see that the traders are ostensibly listening to everything the voters have to say.
Caesars Sportsbook Assistant Director of Trading Adam Pullen further clarified the award and how important Week 18 is to it.
“Currently in a two-man race for DROY, Jalen Carter is a -120 favorite and Will Anderson is a +165 favorite. Anderson is slightly better in numbers but has played fewer games than Carter. The Eagles' defense has struggled in recent games, and that could tip things in Anderson's direction.
However, despite missing that game, Anderson's counting stats are significantly better.
“This race goes into Week 18, and it looks like it will be a contest between the players who played better in the final week of the regular season. As always, you remember what you see last.” He will have his first chance to impress voters in prime time against the Colts, who will go home if he wins. When it comes to Caesars Sportsbook, Jalen Carter's award is not as big of a liability as Anderson's. No. Carter will help the Eagles get back on track Sunday against the Giants.”
