Jets’ C.J. Mosley sensing ‘anticipation’ in place for 2024

On Sunday, there will be intense mutual admiration on the field in Foxboro, Mass., where the Jets play the Patriots in their final game of the season.

Whether before or after the game, it's unclear whether Bill Belichick, the venerable record-setter and polarizing Patriots head coach, will manage his final game in New England. It will be time to look for a linebacker for the Jets. We asked CJ Mosley for a conversation with some encouraging words.

Belichick doesn't flippantly toss flowers when talking about opposing players, but he rarely talks about the Jets without mentioning Mosley.

If you look at the way Belichick coaches (think “do your job”) and the way Mosley plays (think trustworthy), a six-time Super Bowl winning coach would take a linebacker with no experience. I can see that he would have wanted to teach. He hasn't played in the playoffs since 2018 and has appeared in just three postseason games in a nine-year career spanning 128 games and 1,059 tackles.

Mosley is a warhorse, as dependable and selfless as any football player on any team. There's a reason he's the Jets' defensive captain. And that's why he was named Friday as the recipient of the Jets' Selfless Warrior Award on behalf of the coaching staff, “as someone who gives the best of himself to his teammates and the team.”

This is also why I want more games from Mosley, and more games this season.

playoff game.

Because Mosley did everything he worked for, fulfilled his responsibilities the way he did, and never laid a finger on the losses the Jets have endured since they acquired him in 2019 as an offseason marquee acquisition. Players who never complain are worth more than a team losing 42 games. He went through four playing seasons.

When Mosley came to the Jets, his mission was to help turn a losing culture into a winning one. That hasn't happened yet, but it's an obvious source of frustration. Of course, one man cannot change the fate of the entire series.

“Football life is just like real life,” Mosley told the Post on Friday. “We have a lot of expectations and we work towards certain goals and certain things, but life is unpredictable and there are ups and downs in between. Life is full of wins, losses, and tough times. right.”

To his credit, unlike many players who have come through these times before, Mosley didn't give up and had the belief that if you keep doing the right thing, good things will happen. Staying the course.

“He's selfless in every way imaginable,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Friday. “He's a great leader. He may not say a lot, but he speaks a lot with his words, his body language, the way he approaches his week.”

Mosley, who has one year left on his contract, insisted he has no regrets about leaving the championship-winning organization in Baltimore after five solid seasons with the Ravens and four Pro Bowl appearances as a difference-maker with the Jets. .

“Honestly, I’m not going to take it back,” he said. “I sometimes get angry or irritated. [at the losing], but how does that make it better? How does it make my teammates around me better? You may take a look [disappointment] You can see it in my face, but you don't see it on the field. ”

Mosley sees hope for 2024. The presence of a healthy Aaron Rodgers at QB supports that hope.

“We've played a lot of games this season with great quarterbacks, but some of the balls he's throwing in practice we haven't seen in games yet,” Mosley said. Told. “All I can say is that he still knows.”

This will be the first offseason in memory that the Jets aren't looking for a new head coach or quarterback, or wondering if the quarterback they're acquiring is their franchise quarterback. This has boosted Moseley's hopes for his 2024 year.

“We kind of know what we have,” Mosley said. “The expectations are there.”

But this past Sunday, Mosley's sole focus is for the Jets to finish the season with a win, just like they started it. A matchup with Belichick, whom Mosley called “obviously one of the best managers this league has ever seen.”

“I’m amazed every time he talks about me because I know his standards,” Mosley said. “We always talk on the field after games and I have a lot of respect for him. Just playing against him, he brings out the best in everyone.”

Belichick knows he can beat Mosley on Sunday.

“If this is his last game as a Patriot, I hope the Jets win keeps us on the right side of history,” Mosley said. “I'm very happy about that. It's a chance to start and end the year the right way and give Jets fans something to be very, very happy about.”
