The Pentagon announced Friday night that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized four days earlier, on New Year's Day, January 1st.
A statement from Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said he was hospitalized due to “complications” following “a recent elective medical procedure.”
The statement did not say what type of surgery it was or what complications there were. The statement, released around 6 p.m. ET, read:
On the evening of January 1, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications following a recent elective medical procedure. He is recovering well and is scheduled to resume his full duties today. The Deputy Secretary of Defense was always prepared to act on behalf of the Secretary of Defense and exercise his authority as required.
The several-day late admission of Austin raised questions about why the Pentagon waited so long to make an announcement. The statement also raised questions about why Austin's recovery took so long.
The US military is currently involved in several crises overseas. These include aiding Israel, thwarting an attack by the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea, and advising and assisting Ukraine in its war with Russia.
The last update from the Pentagon on Austin's activities came on Dec. 30, after Austin called with the Dutch defense minister.
