Taxpayers foot bill for $23M DOJ investigation into Trump, $6.4M Biden probe

The Justice Department is spending more than three times as much investigating former President Donald Trump's alleged misconduct than it would have to investigate President Biden's classified documents scandal.

Two investigations conducted by special counsel Jack Smith against Mr. Trump cost taxpayers more than $23 million, while a Justice Department investigation into Mr. Biden's handling of classified documents cost taxpayers about Damages amounted to $6.4 million, totaling approximately $30 million.

The numbers were revealed Friday in a Justice Department spending report and reflect total spending by both special counsels from early April 2023 through the end of September 2023. The total also includes costs incurred by other Department of Justice agencies in connection with the investigation.

Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate President Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents and interference in the 2020 election.

The special counsel's first spending report, covering the period from mid-November 2022 to the end of March 2023, shows that Smith and other agencies within the Justice Department spent $9 million of taxpayer dollars on the Trump investigation. revealed that he was using it. In contrast to the Justice Department's heavy spending on the Trump investigation, another Department of Justice report released Friday Special Counsel Robert Hur's investigation into Biden's classified documents case revealed that it cost taxpayers $2.8 million between early April 2023 and the end of September 2023.

Other Justice Department agencies that supported the Biden investigation during the same period incurred costs of $2.4 million, bringing the total spent on the Biden investigation from April 2023 to September 2023 to $5.2 million. Ta.
