When the calendar turns to 2024, the presidential election will be in the spotlight on Sunday news shows.
The first vote of the 2024 cycle, the Iowa Caucuses, is more than a week away. So Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida), who will appear on CBS's “Face the Nation” on Sunday, hopes to upset former President Trump and add momentum to his struggling presidential campaign.
Trump leads the polls by a massive 34-point margin in Iowa, according to Hill/Decision Desk average vote averages. DeSantis trails with 18 percent support.
In recent weeks, there has been a flurry of legal attempts to exclude former President Trump from the primary ballot, citing the 14th Amendment's “insurrection clause.”
The most notable effort in Colorado is now headed to the Supreme Court. The justices will decide whether Trump's actions surrounding the January 6 riot at the Capitol violated the 14th Amendment and disqualifies him from being president.
Maine's secretary of state also barred Trump from voting last week, and Democratic activists in Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Illinois filed similar 14th Amendment challenges this week. The upcoming Supreme Court case is likely to be the most important election case since Bush v. Gore and will determine who will vote in 2024.
Saturday marked the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, with activists calling for action and lawmakers warning of the threat of future political violence.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), one of the most vocal voices about the Jan. 6 riot, is scheduled to appear on ABC's “This Week,” where rioters shouted for Mike Pence to be hanged. The former vice president is also scheduled to appear. CNN's “State of the Union.”
President Biden gave a dire speech Friday evening about democracy and the future of January 6th.
“Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the vote,” he said. “Donald Trump's campaign is obsessed with the past, not the future. He's willing to sacrifice democracy to put himself in power.”
Biden campaign official Quentin Fulks is scheduled to appear on NBC's “Meet the Press.”
“Fox News Sunday” will focus on immigration, with a showdown between Texas Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (Democrat).
Mr. Abbott came under fire again this week over a migrant transportation program that moves thousands of people from Texas to so-called “sanctuary cities” such as New York City, Chicago and Denver.
New York City this week sued more than a dozen transportation companies responsible for transporting migrants, alleging they broke state law. Mr. Johnston joined leaders in New York City and Chicago in criticizing Mr. Abbott last week.
“What we want is a system that is humanist, both for the new people who are arriving and for our city and city employees. So we understand that there will be an influx. 35,000 immigrants have arrived in Denver, and we have successfully helped them integrate here,” Johnston said. “What we don't want is people arriving at city or county buildings at 2 a.m. with women and children in 10-degree weather without any support.”
