President Biden took time Saturday to reflect on the three years since a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, claiming that American democracy did indeed win that day.
“Three years ago, a mob fueled by lies stormed the U.S. Capitol.” Biden posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Our democracy was tested. But it lasted because We the People won.”
“It's up to us to prove that for all its imperfections, American democracy remains a beacon to the world and a promise to be kept,” he added.
Vice President Kamala Harris posted something along the lines of: same messagecondemned the violence and any attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election that put Biden and Harris in the White House.
“On January 6, we were reminded that we still have work to do to protect our democracy and fundamental freedoms,” she wrote.
In his first major speech of the new year, Biden said: attacked Regarding former President Trump regarding the January 6th riot. He focused on the insurrection to drive home his own argument that the former president and his supporters are embracing the kind of extremism displayed three years ago.
“Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot,” Biden said Friday in a speech in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Experts are sounding the alarm on the state of democracy as the country heads into an election year divided over the importance of the anniversary. A recent poll found that a quarter of Americans believe in the conspiracy theory that the Federal Bureau of Investigation organized and encouraged the attack on the Capitol, and satisfaction with American democracy has declined. .
The violent 2021 riot resulted in multiple deaths, the ransacking of the Capitol, the indictment of Trump, and the conviction of nearly 1,000 rioters.
Three years later, prosecutors are still searching for nearly 80 suspects for their involvement in the insurrection, in what was the largest criminal investigation in U.S. history.
As President Trump faces a landmark Supreme Court ruling over his role in the attack and whether he should remain on Colorado's primary ballot, the defendants were questioned whether the Justice Department lawfully applied obstruction charges. We are requesting that the lawsuit be postponed until the Supreme Court makes its decision.
Biden on Saturday called on his supporters to remember the attacks and called on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to stand up for democracy.
“For a long time, we've told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed, but that's not really the case,” Biden said. In another X post “Each of us must protect it, defend it, and stand up for it.”
In his personal account, Biden ripped again. President Trump said, “He is willing to sacrifice democracy in order to seize power.''
“On the anniversary of January 6th, I'm going to say something that Donald Trump didn't say.” the president wrote “Political violence will never be tolerated in the United States.”
