‘I have more work to complete’

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) announced Monday his plans to run for re-election. The announcement comes after former Majority Leader Hoyer resigned from House leadership in January 2023.

Mr. Hoyer, 84, said in a statement.

“America's values, character, and very soul are at stake in this election. The freedoms that make our country special will be on the ballot,” Hoyer said. “Because its freedom and democracy have been preserved by the blood and votes of patriots, this nation, in Lincoln's words, 'should not perish from the face of the earth.'”

“Given these risks, I believe I have more work to do on behalf of my district, my state, and my country,” he continued. “I am blessed to have the health, physical strength, and unrelenting passion necessary to continue serving my constituents at a critical moment for Maryland and America.”

The congressman said he spoke with his wife, family, colleagues in Congress and Maryland voters before deciding to seek re-election to the House.

He ultimately decided he still had work to accomplish as a legislator.

“When I resigned from my position as Majority Leader, I decided to remain in Congress because I had work that I wanted to continue to accomplish,” he said in a statement.

He added, “I was also looking forward to returning to work on the Appropriations Committee, which includes securing a location for the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt. I will continue to work to ensure that the project is fully funded. “My return to the Appropriations Committee will also allow me to continue my efforts to expand the Judy Center, support military installations in the 5th District, and address other priorities for Marylanders.”

In a statement, Hoyer criticized the infighting within the Republican Party last year, including the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He criticized Republican leadership, calling this Congress “one of the most partisan and polarized Congresses we've ever seen.” He also predicted that Democrats will gain a majority in the next Congress and “will be able to deliver for families in Maryland and across the country.”

Mr. Hoyer has been a member of Congress since 1981.
