Mike Kafka seems likely to return to Giants next season

The Giants will likely bring back one of their three coordinators next season.

According to the newspaper's Paul Schwartz, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey on Monday and hired Brian after a tumultuous few days for the organization, which saw him part ways with defensive coordinator. The paper reported that he appears to be planning to rejoin Coach Daboll's staff. Wink Martindale on Wednesday.

Kafka's return isn't carved in stone, however, as the Titans asked Kafka for permission to interview after firing Mike Vrabel this week.

He didn't offer much insight into his future with the team ahead of the season's final game against the Eagles.

“Really, my only focus is today and this week and getting the guys the best preparation for Philadelphia,” he said.

It's no secret that the 36-year-old could be poached. He and Martindale were among the candidates to fill coaching vacancies leaguewide last season, but both opted to return to the Giants.

Kafka met with several teams last offseason, interviewing with the Panthers, Texans and Colts, and was believed to be a finalist for Carolina and Houston.

One of the reasons he attracted so much attention last year was his effective offense. But the numbers didn't bear him out this season as quarterback Daniel Jones went down with an injury and the offensive line allowed a league-high 85 sacks.

Daboll may elect to take over play-calling duties, but it's unclear how his postseason interview with Kafka went.

However, the continuation will be welcomed by the attackers.

“I think that's important to all of us,” Jones said Monday. “It takes a lot of time to learn the system, learn the details and make sure everyone is on the same page.”
