Ohio House Overrides Veto on Bill Banning Trans Interventions for Minors and Protecting Women’s Sports

The Ohio House on Wednesday rejected the governor's veto of a bill that would ban biological boys from playing on girls' teams and also ban minors from receiving cross-sex hormones, puberty-blocking drugs and sex-reassignment surgery. A resolution was passed to invalidate the .

The House voted 65-28 to override Governor Mike DeWine's veto of the bill, which includes two key provisions: the Save Ohio Youth from Experimentation (SAFE) Act and the Save Women's Sports Act. .

The bill now goes to the state Senate, where it is expected to be voted on on January 24, according to Reuters.

DeWine is a Republican. Republicans control both chambers.

“This is a vote to protect women and children,” said state Rep. Melanie Miller, a sponsor of the bill. “We must ensure that our children do not make life-changing decisions at an early age, decisions that can never be undone. Mom and dad should always be involved in these important decisions. When it comes to women's athletics, this vote will ensure that women can compete on a level playing field, rather than competing against biological men.”
