Futuristic ‘upside-down skyscraper’ proposed in Saudi Arabia

Who said living in the mountains isn't a luxury?

A Saudi Arabian developer on Wednesday announced plans for an “ultra-luxury upside-down skyscraper” that would look straight out of a science fiction movie and would be built into a mountainside on the Gulf of Aqaba coastline.

The project, Aquelum, will “offer guests a taste of future living through a variety of pioneering experiences,” according to NEOM, the same developer who proposed building the city within the 75-mile building. It is advertised as an underground city and tourist destination. .

Digital renderings of this avant-garde project show a 330-foot-tall outdoor ecosystem teeming with upscale shops, performance shows, and galleries, and an abundance of It shows green plants and natural light. – foot high mountain ranges.

This special destination is so cleverly disguised that guests must be transported from the floating marina to Aquelum via underground canals.

Once inside, visitors will encounter a “digitalized community” with lounge areas and innovative hubs. Neom said.

One such area is a space made up of various laboratories built to accommodate scientists and researchers, prematurely dubbed “The Generator.”

Virtual reality is a key component of Aquellum. In the mock-up, a guest wears his VR glasses and watches his cube of digitized lights dance within an outdoor ecosystem.

“Aquellum represents a futuristic ecosystem harmoniously integrated into the natural environment,” NEOM said.

Although broadly innovative, this cube-shaped city is not the most exotic development that NEOM has unveiled in recent years.

In 2022, the company unveiled The Line, a 75-mile-long mirror city that will tower higher than New York's Empire State Building.

The $1 trillion mega-development will include an artificial ski resort, as well as robots and AI for the project's residents.

NEOM is spearheaded by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
