A new survey finds that while the number of voters supporting Democrats is at an all-time low, the number of independents continues to grow.
Political independents have long been the largest political group in the United States. As of 2023, 43% of voters identify as independent, matching his previous record set in 2014. This was revealed in a Gallup poll.
The Democratic Party is at its lowest level in 35 years, with just 27 percent of voters supporting the Democratic Party. The survey also found that 27% of voters support the Republican Party.
Independents have long outnumbered Republicans and Democrats. Gallup reports that the only time they did not constitute the largest group of voters was from 2004 to 2008.
Since 2022, voter support for both major parties has decreased by 1 point, but support among independents has increased by 2 points.
“Democratic identity has declined by one point in each of the past three years,” Gallup writes. “These declines and the new lows recorded in 2023 are likely related to the unpopularity of President Joe Biden.”
According to Gallup, independent voters have trended toward Republicans in recent years. Historically, independent voters have tended to lean Democratic, but 2023 survey results show that 45 percent of voters identify as Republican or Republican-leaning, while 43 percent identify as Democratic or Republican-leaning. He leans toward the Democratic Party.
Last year was the third time in the past 35 years that Republicans had a slight advantage.
Gallup noted that in six of the last seven presidential elections, the number of people who identify as independents has declined as the concentration of elections between the two major parties has increased. Still, he added that despite that decline, independent voters will still maintain a majority in this election.
“As 2024 begins, the parties are closely aligned based on party identification and leanings. But Democrats are clearly in a weaker position than in any election year in recent years,” Gallup wrote.
“In what is expected to be a close race, it is important for each party, especially the Democratic Party, to nominate candidates who can appeal to independent voters.”
The study is based on consolidated data from 1988 to 2023, including interviews with more than 12,000 adults over the past year.
