As college football continues to undergo major changes, including conference realignment, transfer portals and name, image and likeness (NIL), one former college football star believes changing circumstances are the reason for Saban's departure.

“The NIL let him get away. He can't control a five-star player anymore, the playing field is level and he can't stand it.” Former USC star reggie bush Saban commented on ESPN's Instagram post citing age as the reason for his retirement.
Saban told ESPN in a television interview that he and his wife, Miss Terry, are in good health, but that the hard work of the 2023 season has left him a little more exhausted than usual.
In an interview with ESPN, Saban, 72, said the changing landscape in sports had nothing to do with his decision to hang up the headset.

“I want nothing more than to see Alabama football continue to be successful,” Saban said in a statement following his appointment. “Coach DeBoer is a great person to lead this program.”
DeBoer was introduced as Alabama's head coach during a press conference Saturday, with Saban also present.
