DeSantis criticizes Senate Republicans for ‘caving’ on immigration deal

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Saturday accused Senate Republicans of “betraying” efforts to secure a border agreement during an event at his Iowa campaign headquarters.

“I'm tired of the Republicans,” DeSantis told supporters at the event. “You see what these senators are doing in Washington right now with the border deal, basically pushing everything onto the Democrats. There is,” he said.

DeSantis' comments Saturday come as he told Fox News on Friday that if the recent border deal is reached between House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Democrats, if he were president This came several hours after he said that it would be invalidated upon arrival.

“You know, some Republicans are too out of touch with their voters,” the governor said.

The presidential candidate's comments came just days before Congressional leaders reached an agreement to avert a government shutdown next week. To avoid a partial shutdown, the House and Senate must approve it by Friday night.

Conservative senators have advocated a number of demands, including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who proposed giving Ukraine $5 billion in aid based on the number of migrants crossing the border each month. Ta. Johnson said McConnell has informed Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who is leading border talks with Senate Democrats and the Biden administration, that he rejects Johnson's proposal. Lankford said Johnson's demands are polarizing in the Republican conference.

The flow of migrants across the southern border is dominating discourse on the campaign trail and on Capitol Hill as Republicans criticize the Biden administration's response to the border.

“Republicans want to deport illegal immigrants, and we need to do that. They want to end these insane border policies that Biden has,” DeSantis said this week. spoke at the beginning. “Yes, they want a wall, and they want that to happen, and they also want action against drug cartels.”

“And what you're likely to see in this deal is a typical Lucy with a football, promising that she's going to deal with the border, and then of course the football will be pulled away and it'll be the same old song. “And dance,” he continued, quoting a scene from the Peanuts cartoon.
