According to the latest polls, all three of the top Republican presidential candidates are leading President Biden in a hypothetical showdown in the general election.
CBS News/YouGov poll Former President Trump, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis each narrowly beat Biden in head-to-head competition. Although Trump remains the clear favorite in the Republican primary, it was Haley who fared best against Biden.
Ms. Haley had an 8-point lead over Mr. Biden, with an approval rating of 53% compared to 45% for Mr. Biden. Research shows this is likely because she enjoys more support among moderates and independents than Trump or DeSantis.
The poll found that 59% of independent voters would support Haley against Biden, while 55% and 54% of independents would support DeSantis and Trump, respectively.
In the race against Biden, DeSantis received 51% support, compared to the president's 48%.
The matchup between Biden, the front-runner in the 2024 election, and Trump is the closest of any Republican presidential candidate. In the poll, 50% of respondents said they would vote for Trump and 48% for Biden.
Trump still maintains a comfortable lead in the Republican primary, with a 55-point lead among Republican voters, according to a new poll. Trump's approval rating is 69%, DeSantis's approval rating is 14%, and Haley's is 12%.
The poll was conducted among 2,870 adults from January 10 to 12 and had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points. The poll also included responses from 786 likely Republican primary voters and had a margin of error of 4.7 percentage points.
