ABC legal analyst Sunny Hostin told her co-hosts on “The View” Monday that “many Americans” are trying to erase the contributions of Black people.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg said, “While only 12 states require Black history, 18 states have passed laws that severely restrict this curriculum. It's now an important part of American history. What is everyone so nervous about? Why are you nervous? The days have passed. Here we are. Why is everyone so nervous? Are you panicking about what happened? Why can't you talk about what happened? We talked about everything else.”
Hostin said, “I think the American people have played the long game. I often say I'm a conservative, but there are a lot of Americans. And what they're doing is slavery that is responsible for the very foundations of this country.” I think it's not just about erasing bad things that might offend people, like social media. What I'm more concerned about is erasing posts from people who don't look like them. So they erased the contributions of people like Bayard Rustin. They erased the contributions of indigenous people. They erased from history that the freezer was developed by black people, that the first open-heart surgery was done by black people, and that the GPS technology we all use today was developed by black women.”
She further added, “And the reason they're erasing those contributions is because you don't contribute to this society the way my culture does, to elevate others as less than themselves.” I think this is very sad because at the core of this country, we are all supposed to be equal. When you've been privileged for so long, equality starts to feel like oppression. ”
