Giants’ Mike Kafka to interview for Seahawks coaching job

The Giants may need to fill the third coordinator position after all.

Giants officials said the Seahawks requested a meeting with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka last week after choosing to move on from head coach Pete Carroll.

The Titans spoke with Kafka last week.

Last Monday, the 36-year-old was announced as the only remaining member of the Giants' staff in 2023 after coach Brian Daboll fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and endured an acrimonious split with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. It was expected.

Kafka became one of the popular coaching candidates after the 2022 season after leading an efficient offensive line led by Daniel Jones to the postseason.

He interviewed with the Panthers, Texans and Colts and was believed to be a finalist for Carolina and Houston, but returned to the Giants sideline for his second year last season.

Jones' season-ending injury and poor offensive line won't help Kafka, and Daboll could elect to take over play-calling duties.

Meanwhile, Martindale, who had emerged as a candidate for the Jaguars' vacant defensive coordinator position, had an ugly rift with the Giants after Daboll fired two of his most trusted assistants, resulting in Martindale telling the coach, “Fuck you.” That’s it,” he declared. At the end of the season meeting.

The Giants have begun interviewing Martindale's replacements, Ravens secondary coach Denard Wilson and Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, and last week hired Carmen Bricillo from the Raiders as their new offensive line coach.

Losing Kafka could be another blow to a team that entered the season with high expectations but finished with 6 wins and 11 losses.

“I think it's important to all of us,” Jones said last week about keeping Kafka with the Giants. “It takes a lot of time to learn the system, learn the details and make sure everyone is on the same page.”
