Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) said Monday that he believes former President Trump's landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses may actually be a bad sign for his campaign.
The media called Trump's campaign just minutes after the caucuses began, with the former president ultimately winning about 51% of the vote, within the range of results predicted by state polls. Despite the results, Biden's re-election campaign adviser Pritzker does not view Monday's caucuses as a landslide victory for Trump.
“Nearly half of the Republican base that attended the caucuses tonight voted against Donald Trump. Think about that,” he said in an interview on MSNBC.
“I think that gets across. This article speaks to the weakness of Donald Trump and the opportunity for the Democratic Party, because if the base isn't enthusiastic about Donald Trump in the general election, and the Democratic Party “Even if you support your base, this is all about you. Independents, we know independents don't like Donald Trump,” he continued.
Pritzker argued that caucuses tend to draw the most fervent supporters, and if about half of them don't support Trump, that bodes well for Biden.
Despite this sentiment, Mr. Trump appears to be strong in polls of Republican voters. An overwhelming majority view him as the best candidate in the party field, and he holds a majority in primaries across the country. The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls has him leading his rival by 53 points.
However, Biden and the former president are evenly matched among moderates and independents, which could lead to a tough battle in the 2024 election.
The Biden campaign has so far sought to shift the focus of the campaign to Trump, promoting the president as the only viable alternative to a second Trump term and its potential consequences. .
The president has emphasized Trump's anti-democratic sentiments in recent weeks, especially in the wake of the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The next Republican vote, New Hampshire's primary, is scheduled for January 23. In the Granite State, Trump leads former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in average turnout by 8 percentage points.
