Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York called on President Trump's main rivals to withdraw from the race and support the former president, saying no one has a chance of defeating him and that unity will help them win in 2024. He claimed that President Biden's defeat could be certain.
“I'm calling on all the other candidates, all the candidates who don't have a chance to win, to stand down so we can come together and rally behind President Trump right away,” she said. Ta. said on monday on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The sentiment comes after Trump won Iowa by a landslide, winning about 51 percent of the vote in the first primary of the 2024 election cycle. His rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, received 21% of the vote, while former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley received 19%.
Following Monday's results, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswami and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson withdrew from the Republican race.
Stefanik's request trumps the Wall Street Journal editorial board's proposal Tuesday that DeSantis drop out of the race to give Haley a real chance to go one-on-one with Trump. It goes one step further.
“Mr. DeSantis does not see a clear path to the nomination. He is far behind Ms. Haley in New Hampshire and South Carolina.” Written by the editorial board Tuesday. “If he believes, as he says, that Mr. Trump cannot win in November, then he should withdraw from the race and give Ms. Haley a chance to go one-on-one with Mr. Trump. ”
Both Haley and DeSantis have presented themselves as better alternatives to Trump, often portraying Trump as good at the time but not what the country needs going forward. .
Haley is doing well in New Hampshire polls, and the next Republican primary is scheduled for January 23. Haley trails Trump by about 8 points in the Granite State, according to The Hill/Decision Desk polling average. Although Haley and DeSantis are tied in national polls, they still trail Trump by a wide margin.
