A Fair Lawn, Virginia, woman died Friday after falling about 100 feet into a cave about 30 miles from her hometown, authorities said.
Giles County Emergency Services said just before 4:15 p.m. Friday, a 911 call came in reporting a woman had fallen about 100 feet into a cave in the Staffordville area near Pearisburg.
The Giles County Sheriff's Office, Pearisburg Fire Department, and Giles Rescue Team responded to the call, and upon arrival, the Serco Emergency Response Team and Blacksburg Rescue Team's Technical Rescue Cave Team were added to assist in the rescue efforts. Requested service.

Once the crew entered the cave, rescue workers located the victim, who was identified as 38-year-old Autumn Nicole Draper, according to local CBS station WDBJ.
Crews were able to rescue Draper from the cave, and the scene was cleared around 1 a.m. Saturday.

A press release from Giles County Emergency Services said the investigation into Draper's death is still ongoing.
According to the Virginia Cavern Survey website, Giles County is approximately 357 square miles and has 253 reported caves.

Of the 253 caves, 62 miles were surveyed. According to research, the longest cave is 118,272 feet and the deepest is 718 feet.
