Donald Trump just gained huge support.
Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed him Tuesday night. “I want to support them passionately,” he said.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed President Donald Trump on Tuesday night, calling for the country to unite behind the Republican front-runner.
“I'm proud to support Donald Trump for president of the United States,” Cruz said on “Hannity.” “I look forward to supporting him enthusiastically.”
Cruz, who fought bitterly against Trump in the 2016 primary, argued that the results of the Iowa caucuses showed there was only one strong Republican candidate.
“[Iowa] It was a landslide victory for Donald Trump. I have to say there is no place like the Iowa caucuses. I know that very well. The men and women of Iowa take their responsibilities incredibly seriously. They are vetting candidates,” Cruz said.
Cruz becomes the 24th U.S. senator to support Donald Trump.
Cruz joins at least 23 other U.S. senators who supported Trump in the Republican presidential primary. The Texas senator has supported Trump in two other elections, in 2020 and 2016.
Cruz endorsed Trump in 2016 after withdrawing his own candidacy for president in that year's primary. Trump reportedly hurled personal insults throughout his campaign, for which he later apologized.
Mr. Cruz recently defended Mr. Trump as he faces ongoing criminal proceedings, accusing Democrats of “weaponizing the legal system.”
