Expectations are sky-high for the Atlas Lions going into this tournament, after their historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar at the end of 2022. Yet Morocco have just one AFCON triumph to their name (way back in the 1970s) and they’re not used to being pre-tournament favourites. Still, with a star-studded squad including goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Manchester United’s Sofyan Amrabat and the world class full back Achraf Hakimi you would expect them to come through today’s test and avoid the kind of ignominious start to AFCON that other big names, such as Egypt, Ghana and Nigeria, have endured.

The Moroccan lineup It would be no surprise if they were in the top 10 of any Premier League in Europe. Packed with quality and experience.
Tanzania, on the other hand, is ranked 121st in the world and is even more of an unknown (Morocco is ranked 13th, the highest of any country competing in this tournament). Tanzania will be captained by PAOK striker Mbwana Samatta. They will be supported by anyone who is eager to see the underdog win.

preamble
Welcome to another day in the Africa Cup of Nations. At the Laurent Pokuu Stadium in San Pedro, Morocco's campaign begins as they take on an unimaginable side, Tanzania.
Expectations are extremely high for the Atlas Lions, who achieved the historic feat of advancing to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar at the end of 2022. However, Morocco has only had one AFCON victory to their name (back in the 1970s). And they're not used to being the favorites before the tournament. Still, with a star-studded squad that includes goalkeeper Yassin Bounou, Manchester United's Sofian Amrabat and world-class fullback Achraf Hakimi, there is hope they can overcome today's test and advance to AFCON. One would hope he can avoid the ignominious start that other big names have experienced. Egypt, Ghana and Nigeria endured.
Kick-off is at 5pm UK time. Team news coming soon. In the meantime, here is a great profile of Morocco and where they stand today by Yara El Chabri.
