Eleven senators voted in favor of a resolution by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) that would require the U.S. State Department to report to Congress on human rights abuses by Israel.
Sanders acknowledged that a “ceasefire” with Hamas is meaningless, as the Palestinian terror group has made clear it intends to continue attacking Israel if given the opportunity.
However, he continues to attack Israel and falsely claim that Israel commits atrocities against Palestinian civilians.
Business Insider listed 11 senators who supported the resolution.
Republican Senator Rand Paul (Kentucky)
Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico
Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon
Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vermont)
Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland
Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey
California Democratic Sen. LaFonza Butler
Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico
Sen. Maisie Hirono, Democratic Party of Hawaii
Democratic Sen. Peter Welch (Vermont)
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts
of solution It singles out Israel and claims that Israel “relies heavily on the use of airstrikes and artillery.”
In fact, rather than relying on airstrikes, Israel is putting its troops at risk with ground invasions, which have already cost the lives of nearly 200 Israeli soldiers.
The resolution also cites Hamas and lists the estimated number of Palestinian deaths, without distinguishing between civilians and terrorists. Israel estimates that nearly 40% of the casualties were combatants.
Sanders' bill also claims that Israel attacked UN facilities, but makes no mention of the fact that Hamas used those facilities to launch attacks or store weapons.
Additionally, the resolution falsely claims that Israel uses “dumb bombs,” a claim that is refuted in the very CNN article that the resolution cites as evidence.
The resolution does not require a human rights report on Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.
