If the Patriots have plans for April's draft, they'll be playing it close to their best.
New Patriots manager Jerrod Mayo gave a cryptic answer during an appearance on Boston's WBZ-TV.
Mayo told the outlet that he is “very excited” to have the No. 3 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft, but did not comment on who he would select with such a valuable pick. He did not go into further details.
“What I'm saying is, we're going to draft the best player for a very important position. You put the pieces together,” he said, smiling at the end.
Mayo was officially introduced as the Patriots' new head coach on Wednesday, but he has a tall order in front of him following the departure of Bill Belichick.
One of the big questions will be what the franchise will do with the No. 3 overall pick, as the quarterback position will be a constant topic of discussion during the 2023 season.
Mac Jones' struggles have once again forced New England to reevaluate the position, and there are several potential QB options in the draft.
Ohio State wide receiver and Heisman Trophy finalist Marvin Harrison Jr. also could play for the Patriots.
However, it's still unclear who will make the final decision on who the Patriots select in April's draft, and owner Robert Kraft didn't offer much clarity on that.
“Today is a day to celebrate Mr. Jerod for taking this position,” Kraft told reporters. According to the Boston Globe. “We have a lot of people within us whose football intelligence is very special and who have had the opportunity to learn and grow under the greatest coach of all time. So in the short term, our team is right. We're looking for collaborations because there's a huge opportunity to build our position. Given our salary cap space, we've never drafted in the 30 years since I've been an owner, and we've never drafted as low as we've drafted. I've never done it.

“So we rely on our internal talent, who are still learning.” [about] So we're going to evolve it and develop it and appoint someone before we have to make any important decisions. ”
