FROST State Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost was mocked on social media Wednesday for telling Republicans to pass a bill to remove the Statue of Liberty along with “bigoted” immigration legislation.
The House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on immigration discussed the House Republicans' Border Security Act and HR2, the comprehensive border security and immigration bill passed in May. The bill would limit asylum procedures for people crossing the border and require construction of the border wall to resume.
The freshman lawmaker was one of many Democrats to attack the bill, but he also created a mock bill to remove the Statue of Liberty that Republicans could pass as well.

“To my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, let's be honest with immigrants who deserve better than what you're offering. Don't welcome immigrants if you're going to reject them. Bigots. If you want to continue pushing HR2, “You should pass this bill. I drafted it for you,” Frost said, holding up the draft. “The Statue of Liberty, the biggest symbol that tells people to come here, is being removed.”
“This is who you are, removing the fabric of America. That's why I want to know which of the Republicans who supported and voted for HR2 will introduce this bill,” he continued. “If you're going to support HR2 and these bigoted policies, the least you can do is not be a liar.”
Mr. Frost's reference to the iconic sculpture was criticized for confusing important immigration reform with the Statue of Liberty's text.
“This is ridiculous,” said Telegraph contributor Niall Gardiner.
FOX News contributor Guy Benson agreed: “My God, this is stupid.”
“Hey! A statue!” joked Spectator contributing editor Stephen Miller, pointing out the left-wing metaphor.
“Democrats can't decide whether to take down statues or pass laws,” wrote author Ryan James Gardusky.
Mark Hemingway, senior writer at RealClearInvestigations, added: “There's only one political party in this country that wants to take down statues, and it's not the Republican Party.”
“Eric Adams is not a Republican. Brandon Johnson is not a Republican. The other mayors who are screaming about immigration are not Republicans,” said Substack writer Jim Treacher.

Radio host Lori Mills explained, “He should sponsor families and illegal aliens should be sent to his district. That's an act of compassion. @GovAbbott.”

Political scientist finds that immigration issue is “promoting polarization'' as the Democratic Party “leans to the left''
The left's equation of the Statue of Liberty with immigration law is a concept often ridiculed by the right. During the Trump administration, Cabinet members were asked how the president's stance on immigration matched the iconic sculpture.
“The Statue of Liberty says, “Give me the tired, the poor, the crowds who long to breathe free.'' There is nothing written about speaking English or becoming a computer programmer. “It's not true,” CNN's Jim Acosta infamously said to then-White House senior adviser Stephen Miller in 2017.

While Frost attacked Republicans, 14 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to condemn President Biden's border policies. Democrats included Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Texas). Jared Golden, Democrat of Maine; Mary Peltola, Alaska. Marie Grusenkamp Perez, Democrat, Washington. and Jared Moskowitz of Florida State.
