Dem proposes to remove Statue of Liberty to protest GOP’s ‘bigoted’ immigration law

FROST State Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost was ridiculed on social media Wednesday for telling Republicans to pass a bill to remove the Statue of Liberty along with “big-minded” immigration laws.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on immigration discussed the House Republicans' Border Security Act and HR2, the comprehensive border security and immigration bill passed in May.

The bill would limit asylum procedures for people crossing the border and require construction of the border wall to resume.

The freshman lawmaker was one of many Democrats to attack the bill, but he also created a mock bill to remove the Statue of Liberty that Republicans could pass as well.

“To my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, let's be honest with immigrants who deserve better than what you're offering. If you're going to reject immigrants, don't welcome them. Bigots. If you continue to push for HR Bill 2, please pass this bill as well. I drafted it for you,” Frost said, holding up the draft. “The Statue of Liberty, the biggest symbol that tells people to come here, is being removed.”

“This is who you are who removed the fabric of America. That's why I want to know who the Republicans who supported and voted for HR2 are going to introduce this bill,” he continued. “If you're going to support HR2 and these bigoted policies, the least you can do is not lie.”

Mr. Frost's reference to the iconic sculpture was criticized for confusing important immigration reform with the Statue of Liberty's text.

“This is ridiculous,” said Telegraph contributor Niall Gardiner.

FOX News contributor Guy Benson agreed: “My God, this is stupid.”

“Hey! Statue!” joked Spectator contributing editor Stephen Miller, pointing out the left-wing metaphor.

“Democrats can't decide whether to take down statues or pass laws,” wrote author Ryan James Gardusky.

Mark Hemingway, senior writer at RealClearInvestigations, added: “There's only one political party in this country that wants to tear down statues, and it's not the Republican Party.”

Substack writer Jim Treacher said, “Eric Adams is not a Republican. Brandon Johnson is not a Republican. None of the other mayors screaming about immigration are Republicans.”

“This country is going to hell because people keep electing idiots like this,” Twitch's Doug Powers declared.

Maryland Sen. Justin Ready commented, “Then I think New York and Chicago should stop complaining!”

“We can support legal immigration and secure borders, but that doesn't mean we have to choose between them,” said Mason Di Palma, deputy communications director for the Republican National Leadership Committee. wrote.

Radio host Lori Mills said: “He should sponsor his family and illegal aliens should be sent to his district. That's the merciful thing to do. @AbbottGovernment.”

The left's equation of the Statue of Liberty with immigration law is a concept often ridiculed by the right. During the Trump administration, Cabinet members were asked how the president's stance on immigration matched the iconic sculpture.

“The Statue of Liberty says, “Give me the tired, the poor, the crowds who long to breathe free.'' There is nothing written about speaking English or becoming a computer programmer. “It's not true,” CNN's Jim Acosta infamously said in 2017 to then-White House senior adviser Stephen Miller.

While Frost attacked Republicans, 14 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to condemn President Biden's border policies. Democrats included Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Texas). Jared Golden, Democrat of Maine; Mary Peltola, Alaska. Marie Grusenkamp Perez, Democrat, Washington. and Jared Moskowitz of Florida State.
