FROST State Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost was ridiculed on social media Wednesday for telling Republicans to pass a bill to remove the Statue of Liberty along with “big-minded” immigration laws.
The House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on immigration discussed the House Republicans' Border Security Act and HR2, the comprehensive border security and immigration bill passed in May.
The bill would limit asylum procedures for people crossing the border and require construction of the border wall to resume.
The freshman lawmaker was one of many Democrats to attack the bill, but he also created a mock bill to remove the Statue of Liberty that Republicans could pass as well.
“To my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, let's be honest with immigrants who deserve better than what you're offering. If you're going to reject immigrants, don't welcome them. Bigots. If you continue to push for HR Bill 2, please pass this bill as well. I drafted it for you,” Frost said, holding up the draft. “The Statue of Liberty, the biggest symbol that tells people to come here, is being removed.”
“This is who you are who removed the fabric of America. That's why I want to know who the Republicans who supported and voted for HR2 are going to introduce this bill,” he continued. “If you're going to support HR2 and these bigoted policies, the least you can do is not lie.”
Mr. Frost's reference to the iconic sculpture was criticized for confusing important immigration reform with the Statue of Liberty's text.

The left's equation of the Statue of Liberty with immigration law is a concept often ridiculed by the right. During the Trump administration, Cabinet members were asked how the president's stance on immigration matched the iconic sculpture.

While Frost attacked Republicans, 14 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to condemn President Biden's border policies. Democrats included Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Texas).
