Minnesota's congressional delegation on Thursday called for a full audit of the U.S. Postal Service in the Minnesota-North Dakota area, joining with state senators to address allegations of “ongoing poor delivery” and “poor treatment of workers.” asked for an answer.
In a letter to USPS Inspector General Tammy Hull, Congresswoman Angie Craig (D-Minn.) said, “The USPS is an important resource for our constituents, many of whom remain dissatisfied with poor delivery service.” “I'm embracing it,” he said. The letter was signed by the state's entire House delegation.
“Over the past year and a half, we have heard from thousands of voters who are disappointed with the Postal Service. “Some people are reporting that their mail is constantly being lost or that first-class mail delivery is severely delayed. We have also received reports that local branches have cut off their phone lines,” the letter continued.
Craig also said allegations of poor treatment of workers at some USPS facilities are “equally alarming.” He noted that the postal district is understaffed, citing USPS management as saying the district was 81 employees short of seasonal targets as of Dec. 4.
“We believe these issues have been ongoing for a significant period of time and further monitoring is urgently needed,” the letter said.
Craig also acknowledged ongoing audits of specific distribution centers and USPS facilities, which he said his House delegation is evaluating. But she said: “We know that the problems at these facilities are not isolated, but are part of a larger postal network that requires further monitoring and recommendations for improvement.” Ta.
“Minnesota and North Dakotans need to know that their prescription drugs, small business packages, and rent checks will be delivered on time. For the past year and a half, many have not. And with a worrying lack of support from the USPS, disgruntled constituents have come to our offices seeking assistance in receiving their deliveries.”
The letter comes after Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) sent a similar letter late last year demanding a full audit.
