House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) broke the news Thursday that Hunter Biden will appear in a closed-door deposition with the committee and the House Judiciary Committee later this month. I welcomed it.
“At the end of the day, I think this is a huge victory for the House Oversight Committee,” Comer said on Fox News. “This is exactly what we wanted[.]”
Biden's deposition in late February followed his avoidance of one in early December, which resulted in lawmakers threatening him with contempt of Congress charges.
“Hunter Biden is scheduled to appear before our committee for a deposition on February 28, 2024. His deposition follows several interviews with Biden’s family and associates. “We look forward to Hunter Biden's testimony,” Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in a statement.
Last week, Biden made an unexpected appearance at the House Oversight and Accountability Committee markup, after the committee held him in contempt of Congress for his defiance of a December subpoena. A resolution was proposed to charge criminal charges.
At the hearing, Rep. Nancy Mace (R.S.C.) expressed strong displeasure at the president's son's visit and asked, “Who bribed Hunter Biden to come here?”
“You are the epitome of white privilege. You ignored Congressional subpoenas for your removal and came to the Oversight Committee spitting in our faces. What are you afraid of? Click here There’s no ball coming,” Mace said.
“I think Hunter Biden should be arrested here right now and sent to prison immediately,” she added.
Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) and Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) condemned Mace following his “white privilege” comments.
“This is something I just can't get over, so I'd like to start all over again. I can't stand a gentleman from South Carolina talking about white privilege anymore,” Crockett said later in the hearing. “When you talk about what white privilege is like, especially from across the aisle, it was like spitting in my face, at least to me as a Black woman.”
