Oakland’s Only In-N-Out Closing Due To Rising Crime

The only In-N-Out restaurant in Oakland, California is closing due to an increase in crime.

Denny Wernick, the company's chief operating officer, said in a statement that although the store was profitable, it suffered from regular car break-ins, property damage, theft and even armed robberies of customers and employees. He said this led to the decision to close.

“We are grateful to our local community for supporting us for over 18 years and recognize the negative impact this closure has had on our employees and their families,” Warwick said. “Additionally, while this location remains a busy and profitable location for the company, our top priority must be the safety and well-being of our customers and employees. You may not be asked to visit or work.

There are no other In-N-Out properties in Oakland, but there are 16 other properties nearby in the Bay Area.

From 2019 to 2023, violent crime records increased by an average of 17%. From 2022 to 2023, violent crime increased by 21% in Oakland and 14% in general areas with restaurants.
