Hello and welcome to live, minute-by-minuteish coverage of Austraian v Uzbekistan in Al Wakrah. It’s the Socceroos’ final group game before the serious business begins. On paper they’ve made a solid start to the Asian Cup, beating India 2-0 and Syria 1-0. On the pitch it hasn’t been quite so persuasive, particularly during two laboured first-half performances, so they could do with a statement performance tonight.

Uzbekistan, who will be in the last 16 barring an unforeseeable turn of events, are the toughest opponents so far. They took Australia to a penalty competition four years ago before Maty Ryan did the necessary. The Socceroos have never lost or even conceded a goal to Uzbekistan; if that continues tonight they will top Group B.

That would theoretically give them an easier route in the knockout stages, though the situation has been complicated by Japan’s defeat to Iraq. The full permutations are frankly far too boring to detail at this stage, so let’s stick to the facts.

If Australia draw or win today, their last 16 will be against a third-placed team from groups A, C or D: one of China, Palestine, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia or – yikes – Japan.

If Australia lose today they will meet the runners up in Group F: probably Thailand, possibly Saudi Arabia or Oman.

Update date and time

Tonight's match will be played at Al Janob Stadium in Al Wakrah. It is a place filled with some of the happiest memories for this generation of players and fans.

Graham Arnold's pre-match thoughts

To be honest, Mitchell Duke is out with a hamstring (injury), so it's going to be one game at a time for him. He underwent a few tests, but he has a minor injury, so he will be out. So this is a great test for me as it's an opportunity to also see other players playing against good opponents. At the end of the day, winning is the most important thing and obviously we can do better in that area.

There have been some changes, but I don't think the depth of the team will be that different from now. I think the team will still be strong despite the changes. I think the most important thing is the personal qualities that sometimes support themselves.

We go into the game to win the game and obviously Uzbekistan have worked really hard as a country, they invest a lot of money in football, they're a good team and we'll be ready for them on Tuesday. I'm going to fix it. It's up to us to go out there with the mindset, work rate, commitment and culture that we have and do a great job for all of us.

Our first goal is to be at the top of the group, and if we don't have high expectations and reach for the stars, we won't achieve anything in life. It's been a great tournament and I'm really excited and very proud of the men's team's first two wins, but it's one game at a time and we'll make sure we finish this game right.

preamble

Hello. Welcome to live minute-by-minute coverage of Australia vs Uzbekistan in Al Wakrah. This is the Socceroos' last group game before serious action begins. On paper, they got off to a good start to the Asia Cup by defeating India 2-0 and Syria 1-0. They weren't very convincing on the pitch, especially with their two heavy-handed performances in the first half, so they might be able to get away with a statement tonight.

Uzbekistan, who will remain in the last 16 unless something unexpected happens, is their toughest opponent yet. Four years ago, they took Australia to penalties before Maity Ryan took the necessary steps. The Socceroos have never lost to Uzbekistan and have never conceded a goal. If that continues tonight, they will advance through Group B.

In theory, that would make it easier for them to advance to the finals, but Japan's defeat in Iraq has complicated the situation. Frankly, it would be too boring to go into detail about the complete permutations at this stage, so let's just stick to the facts.

Australia draws or wins todayThe Round of 16 will be played against the third place teams from Groups A, C and D. Either China, Palestine, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, or Japan.

If Australia loses today They will face the second-placed team in Group F. Probably Thailand, Saudi Arabia or Oman.

That's all that's left. Let's start with business.
