Tampa, Florida (W.F.L.A.) — A giant sinkhole has opened up in the front yard of a Florida home, causing similar concerns for the man who lives there and his neighbors.

A sinkhole opened Saturday outside a home in Highland City, about 40 miles east of Tampa, Polk County Fire and Rescue officials said.

“We woke up to our neighbors,” resident Kyle Austin told Nexstar's WFLA. “A neighbor woke us up around 8 o'clock and said there was a big hole in his front yard. When we went outside to look, there was about a 60-foot drop in our front yard. ”

As of 11:22 a.m. Saturday, the hole was about 15 feet wide and about 60 feet deep, according to PCFR's social media.

“I'm very nervous because my two children are near the sinkhole and 30 feet away from my room,” Austin said.

“It's very strange and very disturbing to know there's a hole 200 feet from your home,” neighbor Ron Kelly told WFLA.

Officials say the sinkhole is not an immediate threat to motorists at this time, so the road remains open at this time.

Polk County Fire and Rescue said they will continue to monitor the sinkhole over the next few days, but officials have told Austin that they won't be able to repair the sinkhole until Tuesday.
