Three long shot picks at Torrey Pines

The PGA Tour heads to one of its most iconic venues this week, the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. It's an unusual Wednesday start for the tour as it looks to avoid Sunday's NFL Conference Championship Game.

Xander Schauffele is the favorite at +900, but he has plenty of company with Collin Morikawa (+1100), Patrick Cantlay (+1100), and Max Homa (+1200).

After the top 4, Min Woo Lee (+2000) drops a bit.

The story of the PGA Tour season so far has been a long shot.

Chris Kirk won the Sentry Tournament of Champions for +20,000, Grayson Murray won about +40,000 at the Sony Open, and Nick Dunlap won his first PGA in 33 years at the American Express last week. He became the Tour Amateur winner.

Will this trend continue this week at Torrey Pines?

2024 Farmers Insurance Open Contenders and Predictions

Will Zalatoris (+5500, Caesars)

Time to get back on the Will Zalatoris train.

Zalatoris, who spent most of 2023 on the sidelines, missed the Sony Open and looked like an empty shell.

However, a week later, things looked pretty promising as Zalatoris posted T34 on American Express.

This finish was truly optimal for bettors, as it wasn't bad enough to make Willie Z untouchable at Torrey Pines, but it wasn't so good that his jersey number disappeared.

Zalatoris finished runner-up here after losing in a playoff to Luke List in 2022.

Hideki Matsuyama (+7000, FanDuel)

Another week, I'm betting on Hideki Matsuyama again.

The 2021 Masters winner hasn't quite found the momentum to start 2024, but a top-30 finish at the Sony Open at least shows his game hasn't fallen off a cliff.

Furthermore, we know that Matsuyama has a bigger chance than basically any other player in this range, and if he achieves a top-10 or similar finish, those numbers will disappear.

Hideki achieved a T9 finish here last year and also achieved a T3 finish in 2019.

Shane Lowry (+8000, FanDuel)

We continue our theme of buying another major champion at a high price.

Shane Lowry missed out on the American Express spot, which isn't great, but it's his first start of the year and an opportunity for value hunters to swoop in and acquire a player with a high ceiling at a scary price. is giving.
