A Fox News panelist said Tuesday that former President Trump reacts with “uncontrollable narcissism and anger” when he feels insulted, pointing to his hostile speech on election night after Tuesday's victory in the New Hampshire Republican primary.
Jessica Tarloff, a Democratic strategist and rotating co-host of Fox News' “The Five,” said during a panel discussion late Tuesday that it “would be wise” for President Trump to target Nikki Haley voters. But President Trump said he was not optimistic that would happen. He can soften his positions and temperament enough to appeal to moderate voters.
Mr. Tarlov pointed to some election results that may have been a sign that Mr. Trump would change his tune, but suggested that ultimately this was not the case.
“He has an uncontrollable narcissism and gets furious when he feels insulted, which attracts people at the bottom. [who] Say, “We love it.” He's a counter puncher. 'However, he lost the general election this time. You led the defeat of the Republican Senate and the Republican House. “Abortion has been on the ballot seven times,” Tarlov said.
“Democrats have been winning overwhelmingly on all of these things, but he's not been a moderate at all. And frankly, I don't think he can do that for more than 20 minutes,” she added.
Trump led Haley by 11 points in Tuesday's Republican primary. In his post-election speech, Haley acknowledged his defeat but struck an optimistic tone, vowing to continue the campaign. In a speech that followed Haley's, Trump attacked her opponent and tried to pressure her to drop out, as all other prominent primary challengers have done. At one point, he even criticized Hailey's dress for looking cheap.
“When we talk about the general election, we talk about millions of votes. But in reality, the number is in the tens of thousands. Right, on the margins of Georgia and Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania. It will be very soon,” Tarlov said during the panel discussion.
Mr. Tarlov emphasized that if Mr. Trump wants to win the general election, it is important to win even a small number of voters by a narrow margin.
She continued: “It can be the difference between coming out and criticizing someone's clothes. Some people may interpret that as degrading women, which is clearly something he struggles with, but… Or maybe some people will interpret it as just a slightly rude comment on someone else's statement.'' “I'm going to stay home,'' or “Actually, Joe Biden will be around for four more years.'' I want it.”
